Police in Port Moody arrested four young people after a replica gun was found during a call involving a firearm threat. The incident happened on the evening of July 21 at the Port Moody Recreation Complex.

At around 8 p.m., officers received a report that someone had seen a youth showing what appeared to be a gun. The youth was part of a group near the complex. Responding quickly, police located and stopped four teens who were leaving the area. All four were taken into custody without incident.

During a search, officers discovered a replica firearm and bear spray in the possession of one of the youths. The police said the gun looked real and could easily be mistaken for a dangerous weapon.

A police spokesperson stressed the danger these items present. They said that fake guns often lead to major police responses, which can put both the public and officers at risk. In high-stress moments, it’s nearly impossible to tell a replica from a real weapon, especially from a distance.

Police did not release the ages of the individuals, but confirmed they are under 18. Because of their ages, the suspects cannot be named under current laws. The youth who had the replica weapon is now facing possible criminal charges. The other three are also under investigation.

The officers involved said they were relieved the weapon was not real. Still, they noted that the event could have had a much worse outcome if not handled carefully.

The Port Moody Police Department said the investigation is ongoing. They are speaking with witnesses and reviewing security footage from the recreation center and nearby areas.

Police are also asking the public to remember how serious it is to carry or display replica weapons in public. Even if the item is not real, it can cause fear and panic. Officers often have to treat these reports as if the weapon is genuine, which can result in armed responses.

The department also reminded parents and guardians to speak with their children about the risks and legal consequences of carrying replica firearms or weapons like bear spray. Such items are not toys and should never be used to threaten or scare others.

This is not the first time police have dealt with similar cases. Across the region, law enforcement agencies have responded to several incidents involving replica guns in recent months. Each one poses serious safety concerns.

Officials hope this case serves as a warning. Even though no one was hurt, the risks were high. The quick action by police likely prevented a more dangerous outcome.

Port Moody police will continue to monitor the situation. They plan to work closely with local schools, families, and community groups to help prevent future incidents.

Anyone with more details about what happened at the recreation complex on July 21 is encouraged to contact the police. Information can be shared anonymously through the department’s tip line.
