Campbell River is inviting residents to take part in shaping the city’s future. Two public sessions will be held this week to gather feedback for a major update of the city’s official community plan. This plan will guide growth and development for the next 20 years.

The first session will be held on Wednesday during the CR Live Streets event on Shoppers Row. It runs from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. The second session is set for Sunday, July 27, at the Campbell River Farmers Market. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The city’s official community plan was last fully updated in 2012. Since then, many things have changed. These changes include the COVID-19 pandemic, new provincial laws such as Bill 44, a growing population, and shifts in the local economy. City officials say it is time to update the plan to reflect the community’s current needs and values.

Campbell River’s mayor noted in April that the update is needed to keep up with these changes. He said the city is working to create a clear and focused plan that will guide future decisions.

The update will involve a complete rewrite of the city’s development permit guidelines. These guidelines shape how and where development can happen in areas like the shoreline, streamside zones, the watershed, and the Campbell River Estuary.

The city’s community planning director explained that the update will include input from many sources. These include other towns’ best practices, recent changes in laws, and advice from experts, partners, and developers. Public feedback will also play a big role.

He said the goal is to make sure development rules are up to date, easy to follow, and match both legal and environmental standards. The city wants to make it easier for residents and developers to understand and follow these rules.

He also said that both existing and future permit guidelines will follow all relevant federal and provincial laws. The city is focused on supporting responsible growth and protecting the natural environment.

This update is a chance for residents to help shape how the city grows over the next two decades. Public ideas will help decide what changes are needed and how they should be made.

The city is encouraging everyone to get involved. Whether people live in Campbell River year-round or part-time, their input can help create a better plan.

Residents who can’t attend the pop-up sessions can still take part in the process. The city plans to offer other ways to share feedback, including online tools, future meetings, and workshops.

City staff say they are committed to making this process open and fair. They want to hear from as many people as possible and make sure the new plan reflects the community’s needs.

The updated community plan will act as a blueprint for Campbell River’s future. It will help guide decisions on housing, business development, environmental protection, and public services. It will also ensure that future projects meet modern rules and support healthy, balanced growth.

This long-term plan is expected to play a major role in how the city changes over time. With public support and clear goals, the city hopes to create a better future for everyone.

The city will continue to give updates as the process moves forward. Locals are encouraged to stay informed and take part in shaping the future of Campbell River.
